TOWSURE DETACHABLE.
The simplest of them all.
Firstly, we fit a conventional towbar with a flange ball fitting, then by
removing two 12mm nuts and bolts we are able to remove the flange ball
fitting, and replace this with a swan-neck fitting, which is supplied with
the kit, we are then ready to tow.
Taking the swan-neck in both hands and turning it through 45 degrees and
at the same time pulling it rearwards, the swan-neck comes out and can be
stored in the boot. When you want to tow again, push the swan-neck back
into the towbar and turn it through 45 degrees, the swan-neck locks into
place.
Should you want to fit a bicycle carrier or jaw and pin, it couldn’t be
easier, just remove the two 12mm nuts and bolts again and refit the flange
ball fitting.
It’s very simple, no keys, no locks and no fiddling about and most
important, it’s the cheapest detachable on the market, looks like Towsure
have done it again!!!
Towsure call their system TEC “Towsure Eclipse Coupling”. Now you see it,
now you don’t.
TYPE APPROVAL.
None of us welcome Brussels interference, but there must surely be some
small up side to so many downs.
On August the 1st 1998 they got their own way again, a new phrase shook
the towbar business, Type Approval. How dare they, they denied us the God
given right to have a cowboy make our towbar for us, so that all of these
wranglers rode off on their white steeds to pastures greener and they are
quite likely making another but different not so small fortune doing
something totally new - like flogging time share?
If you drive a saloon – hatch – estate – coupe – sports car or perhaps a
minibus that is post “S” reg and you want to tow with it, then you are
required to have a type approved towbar fitted – camper vans and
commercials are exempt. Whether we like it or not T/A is with us to stay
and of course as you would expect, the humble towbar got dearer. That’s
the down side, the up side is the obvious improvement, the rubbish (and
there was quite a bit of that) disappeared and the best got better, a
whole lot better. There is no such thing as a bad towbar now, they have
all gone, what is left is a much more pleasing appearance, so much lighter
and a hell of a lot stronger.
So dear reader, look on the bright side, the bitter pill to accompany the
sharp intake of breath on hearing the quote for your new towbar, is as
they say, for your own good.
OTHER TOWBAR MANUFACTURERS.
It is of course difficult to be passionate over towbars, unless like us,
you are in the business.
For the sake of simplicity we tend to keep the number of our suppliers to
the absolute minimum, with Witter, Towsure and Bosal you get price,
quality, delivery and a hell of a range. Witter have about 640 bars in
their range, Towsure some 520 and Bosal come up with a similar number to
Witter’s. For the unusual, Watling top the lot with over 1000 different
towbars and a lot for the weird and wonderful like Ferrari, Rolls Royce
and Porsche not to mention a very large selection of American cars and
trucks with an equally impressive selection of towbars for motor cycles,
also their range of camper bars is on the increase.
It is quite conceivable that the reader will not be too familiar with some
of the names used here, so please forgive us if we ramble on a bit.
Dixon-Bate are probably one of the older manufacturers,
although today they tend to concentrate more on military and commercial
vehicles. Brink have a similar range to Bosal, both companies supplying
towbars of the fixed type and the detachable variety, with a powder coated
finish, both are of the highest quality. Some other names to help to
bemuse you would be Anker, A1 Leisure, Towtrust, Eeco, York and PCT Automotive,
then there is Eurobars a French company with outlets in the UK who build
to an equally high standard.
So you see, the towbar world is as they say, your oyster, we know it’s
really fish and chips, but oyster makes it sound so much more up market.
